Anatomy of Nerve Pain
By Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science Officer

Pain is a funny thing. It is not a hilarious thing, unless you have a really sick sense of humor. But it is funny in that pain is really a trick played on us by our mind to get us to do something. Let us examine the anatomy of pain to see if we can learn to listen to its message.

Pain fibers
Nerves do many wonderful things, such as empowering our stomach to digest our food, empowering our heart to pump our blood and empowering our eyes to read this page. These are called efferent nerves. Efferent nerves carry signals from your brain to your body.

Nerves that carry signals from your body to your brain are called afferent nerves. Different receptors in afferent nerves help us distinguish hot and cold, a light touch from heavy pressure, and the many faces of pain signals: sharp, dull, throbbing, fixed, migrating, piercing, etc. Even numbness or pins-and-needles sensations are really pain sensations because of their afferent nerve signals.

Pain nerves are covered in a protective sheath called myelin. The myelin sheath may become damaged from injury, toxicity, and certain deficiencies such as Vitamin B-12 and folate. When this occurs, we will feel pain sensations when no injury really exists.

This is where the trickery begins.

Interpreting the signals
A pain signal is designed to get you to avoid serious injury. If you put your hand on a hot stove, pain signals get you to quickly remove or withdraw your hand before more serious injury occurs. The same with cold, sharp, dull, etc. Pain is very motivating!

Afferent nerves do not really feel pain. You do not really feel pain. Your nerves merely carry a signal from your body to your brain. Your brain, in turn, interprets this signal according to the type of nerve that conveys the message.

When you touch something hot, your brain interprets heat; you do not really feel heat.
When you touch something cold, your brain interprets cold; you do not really feel the cold.

When you experience pain you are not really feeling pain; your brain is interpreting a signal as pain. That becomes very important as we discuss the remedies for chronic pain.

Remedies for pain
Pain is the way your body signals that there is something wrong requiring immediate attention, withdraw from the pain! Switches, like light switches that turn on a light, turn on the pain signal when danger exists and turn it off when danger has passed. So, the first remedy for chronic pain is to withdraw from whatever is causing the pain.

With chronic pain, sometimes the switch gets turned on and never gets turned off! These switches, often called pain gates, are ruled by nutrients such as Vitamin D. Also, in chronic nerve pain, a signal is sent from a damaged area or lesion in the myelin sheath. The myelin sheath is ruled by nutrients such as Vitamin B-12 and folate as well as essential fatty acids.

Chronic muscle pain occurs when muscles try to restore balance to an unbalanced muscle region. The imbalance may be caused by injury, stress, a sedentary lifestyle or poor posture (really, poor posture and sedentary living are types of muscle injury). Muscle balance is ruled by magnesium and, to a smaller extent, by potassium and calcium.

A word about inflammation
Just as chronic nerve pain can become caught in a loop or cycle, inflammation may become chronic even after the cause of the inflammation is removed. The chemicals of inflammation injure your afferent nerves and your brain interprets this injury as chronic pain. Pain and inflammation go hand in hand.

To break the cycle of chronic pain we must:

Remove the cause: trauma-injury, toxins, etc.
Restore nutrient balance
Break the cycle of inflammation

In this way we can learn to listen to the message of pain and achieve the balance of pain-free living!

How to Minimize the Effects of Stress
By Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science Officer

Prolonged, chronic stress causes illness. It is one of the four causes of imbalance and illness (trauma, toxins, deficiency and stress).

Can I define stress for you? The technical definition is change, any change you must adapt to is stress. Adapting to stress costs us energy. Prolonged stress causes fatigue and exhaustion. But you probably did not need that definition. You probably know the effects of chronic stress all too well. Maybe a better use of our time together would be to discuss what stress does to cause illness and how we can minimize the effects of chronic stress.

Know your enemy!
Our system is balanced by an internal process called homeostasis. No matter which direction life pulls us, homeostasis pushes us back and we regain our balance. If homeostasis fails to restore balanced health because of stress, we will experience distressing symptoms. Severe or prolonged imbalance may lead to adverse health conditions.

Stress can imbalance the function of our immune system. When this happens we may get autoimmune disorders such as Graves disease, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and allergies.

Stress can disrupt your circulation and cause high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries and coagulation disorders, where a person forms blood clots abnormally.

One of the most common reactions to stress is metabolic syndrome, a collection of imbalances surrounding obesity and type 2 diabetes. Stress can cause metabolic syndrome which causes central obesity, the accumulation of fat around your middle. It causes us to have low HDL (good cholesterol), high total cholesterol, high LDL (bad cholesterol), high triglycerides and high blood sugar. Metabolic syndrome causes hormone imbalances. For example, many women with polycystic ovary syndrome have metabolic syndrome and are pre-diabetic or diabetic.

Fighting the enemy
So, we can agree that stress kills! Before stress kills us, however, it makes us sick, fat and miserable. Stress prevents us from having successful relationships. It blurs our sense of purpose. Stress prevents us from making good decisions and it directly causes or indirectly contributes to disease. We need to mount an effective strategy to resolve the impact of stress.

The first technique of stress management is isolation from unnecessary stressors. Simplify your life. To determine if a stress is worth holding on to, ask yourself first if it is worth dying for, because stress will kill you. Alternately, ask yourself if a particular stressor is worth suffering for and being miserable for and being fat for, because these are the consequences of prolonged stress.

Following isolation from stress is insulation against the effects of stress. Practice deep breathing for 10 minutes, three times daily and 20 minutes at bedtime. This can reduce the impact of stress by up to 50 percent. So, deep breathing may cut the impact of stress in half.

Peaceful sleep, daily activity and eating nutritiously can also help reduce the impact of stress.

Adaptogens help support homeostasis so we are better able to resume balance even under extreme stress. The effect of adaptogens is non-specific: it does not matter where the stress is coming from or what is causing it, adaptogens help reduce the impact of stress and promote homeostasis to rebalance us. Add Sublingual Vitamin B-12 to help protect the brain from stress as well.

The most important lesson we can learn about stress is that we must not minimize it; stress will kill you if you do not manage it effectively. The most important lesson regarding stress management is the same: do not minimize the techniques of deep breathing, peaceful sleep, vigorous daily activity and eating nutritiously. You can win the battle against the imbalances of stress if you know your enemy.

Take Control of Your Health

Do a mental inventory of your stresses:
External
Internal, from your thoughts, etc.
Assess your circumstances and simplify your life

Do not Just Go Skin-Deep
by Steve Solomon

TriVita

No two people have identical skin. However, there are five essentials that apply to everyone who wants to achieve youthful, radiant skin.

Essential number 1. Feed your skin with antioxidants.

An inside-out approach helps create the healthiest skin. Antioxidants protect your skin from skin damage, toxic chemicals, pollution and inflammation. All fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds contain antioxidants. The more antioxidants we eat, the more protection we will have. TriVitas Fruits n VEGEZ also provides a rainbow of antioxidants.

Other vitamins that help skin health include Vitamins C, E, B-12 and biotin. Fish oils, found in TriVitas OmegaPrime, also help reduce free radicals which can damage smooth and helps smooth out lines and wrinkles.

Essential number 2. Know your skin type.

Most problem skin falls into five major categories: acne-prone, sensitive, aging, cellulite and skin-in-transition. Being aware of your skin type and treating it accordingly will help delay or even stop future damage.

Essential number 3. Encourage cell turnover.

Depending on your skin type consider an exfoliant, a skin care product that is applied to the skin to remove dead cells from the surface. When making your choice, read the label and consult your doctor.

Essential number 4. Make a clean sweep.

Clean bacteria-bearing brushes at least weekly. If you do not wash your brushes, germs and bacteria can easily be transferred back into skin and into your makeup or skin care products.

Essential number 5. Use SPF protection.

It is vital to protect skin from sun damage and aging skin. Some skin care and cosmetic products feature SPF (Sun Protection Factor) right in the formulations. Use broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection in a lightweight formulation to protect against sun damage and premature aging.

Forgiveness: The Bottom Line of Spirituality!
By Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science Officer

There are significant differences of opinion in the world when it comes to the definition of spirituality. A recent series of articles in the medical literature discuss these differences and an amazing commonality. Further, as we are all inherently spiritual (my humble opinion), articles on forgiveness detail methods for improving the impact of forgiveness on our physical and mental health.

Let me share some of the reports with you.

Forgiveness. What is it?
I have read many descriptions of both the act and the process of forgiveness. My favorite description is that forgiveness means to let go of the anger from an offense without demanding retribution or compensation. The medical definition of forgiveness is the absence of ill will. In any event, forgiveness is not intended to justify or minimize the actions of the offender. Rather, it is letting go of the ill will so you can get on with your life.

Psychology versus spirituality
Sigmund Freud is considered to be the father of modern psychoanalysis. He was a devout atheist. He considered religion to be a mental illness and called the pursuit of spirituality an infantile delusion. His teachings influenced the education of todays psychologists, though everyone has their own beliefs. In this light, there has often been something of an incongruity between psychology and spirituality. They do not often come together in agreement.

With all due respect to Sigmund Freud, science has often linked physical and emotional health with religiosity (the quality of being religious). In the landmark book, The Blue Zones, religious practice was the central aspect in the lives of all but five of the nearly 300 centenarians studied. Spiritual development makes us healthy and happy.

As it turns out, the incongruence between spirituality and psychology is resolved and both fields agree on one point: Forgiveness is a key to physical and emotional health.

Stress, sadness and forgiveness
In a recent report, volunteers from five religions, Catholicism, Protestantism, Judaism, Buddhism and Islam, were involved in a study of the impact of forgiveness on health. All five of these religions teach the need to forgive (so does the field of psychology). Those who were successfully able to forgive, those who let go of ill will, were always healthier than those who could not. Another study demonstrated that stress and sadness dramatically affected the ability to forgive and influenced the health outcomes of the participants. It seems that attempts to forgive are frustrated by high levels of stress and continual sadness.

Forgiveness is a spiritual and psychological discipline. It is accomplished by letting go of the resentment and demand for recompense. We have reached that state of forgiveness when we no longer harbor ill will.

Stress management is also a discipline. It is accomplished when our internal resources meet or exceed our external demands for change. Rest, exercise and nutrition play a role in stress management, as does supplementing our diet with Vitamin B-12 and adaptogens. Adaptogens help us build a fortress against the onslaught of stress. Some of the adaptogens such as Rhodiola rosea help relieve sadness as well. Vitamin B-12 improves our ability to adapt to change and cope with stress. Adaptogens and Vitamin B-12 form a Stress Protection Pack to help you build a solid platform for building emotional and spiritual health.

Conclusion
You cannot achieve complete health and wellness without mastering the habit of forgiveness. Work on it daily; begin with forgiving yourself. Use supplements such as Adaptogen 10 Plus and Sublingual B-12 to put you on the best foundation to cultivate forgiveness, an essential wellness trait.

Seasonal Allergies: In Full Bloom
by Steve Solomon
TriVita

Clearing the air about histamines
More and more people are experiencing allergies and suffering with related symptoms. What causes allergies? They typically develop when histamine receptors trigger inflammation in the four tissues they populate our:

Airways

Digestive-reproductive tracts

Brain

Immune system

Histamines are triggers for runaway inflammation. How are histamines produced? What effect do they have on the four receptor sites?

The four sites
We are all familiar with H-1 site (airways) symptoms: watery, itchy, inflamed eyes and nose, throat and lungs. Inflammatory symptoms occur in the three other sites:

H-2 sites (digestive-reproductive tracts) inflame and we experience: acid indigestion, gastric reflux, dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, colitis and inflammation of the reproductive tract.

H-3 sites (the brain) inflame and we experience: anxiety, agitation, insomnia, depression, attention deficit-hyperactivity, autism, schizophrenia and Alzheimers disease.

H-4 sites (the immune system) inflame and we experience: autoimmune symptoms associated with chronic fatigue, body aches and pains, rapid aging and hormone disruption.

The root of the tree may be the same (histamines) but the fruit on the tree (symptoms) depends on our genetics, environmental factors and lifestyle choices. It also depends on timing. For example, an explosion of histamines in the brain may produce hyperactivity in the young and anxiety in the elderly (and insomnia in everyone).

Important for growth
Histamines are not bad chemicals, just misunderstood. We sometimes need histamines to protect us from poisons. When we have hay fever, our body misidentifies a harmless pollen grain as a toxic poison. Histamines actually flood the area to remove the pollen. Our ability to stay awake and alert is dependent upon histamines as well. However, when these become imbalanced we may experience symptoms such as pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) and hyperactivity.

Relief from Vitamin B-12
The body needs Vitamin B-12 to maintain proper histamine balance. The amount of B-12 in the bloodstream is not important in deciding how much B-12 you can use. Vitamin B-12 exits the blood system quickly and we may get a false impression of our actual need for nutrient balance by viewing B-12 this way. It is better to look at the end results if we are to truly determine the benefit of taking B-12.

TriVitas Super Sublingual B-12 helps restore balance to people troubled by signs of high histamines. Regardless of your specific symptoms, Super Sublingual B-12 may offer the relief you need from the inflammation of elevated histamines.
